Percepción de la comunidad local en torno al impacto de la actividad turística en Bahías de Huatulco, México, a partir de su certificación ambiental

Resumen

El ecoturismo ha contribuido al equilibrio natural,
social y económico de los destinos. Bajo
esta mirada, el turismo deberá coexistir con el
entorno natural y social de manera equilibrada;
una forma de lograrlo es a través de las certificaciones
ambientales.
Las certificaciones ambientales han cobrado gran
valor en el turismo; en México, el Centro Integralmente
Planeado (CIP) Bahías de Huatulco fue el
primero en obtener la certificación EarthCheck
como destino sustentable a nivel América y el
segundo a nivel internacional. Existen organismos
no gubernamentales en fortalecer las certificaciones
ambientales, como el Equipo Verde
Huatulco A.C. que a través de certificadoras como 

EarthCheck concretan proyectos que facilitan a
los destinos obtener esta acreditación.
Estos proyectos se centran en el destino, prestadores
de servicios y comunidad local. Sin embargo,
al parecer la comunidad local se ha dejado
de lado ya que se desconoce su percepción en
torno a este tema. En este artículo, el propósito
del estudio fue identificar la percepción de la
comunidad local respecto a la actividad turística
en el CIP Bahías de Huatulco, a partir de su certificación
ambiental. Algunos resultados son, que
la actividad turística es percibida por la mayoría
de la comunidad local como una oportunidad de
desarrollo económico; culturalmente, en el destino
se han impulsado actividades que involucran
a turistas y población local, lo que, en opinión de
ésta última, ha evitado la pérdida de su identidad.
Pero, también asumen a la actividad turística
como “depredadora”, por la saturación de turistas
que se concentra en ciertos lugares, impactando
en playas, en el medio ambiente marino y en la
imagen de la zona. Derivado de ello se proponen
acciones para fortalecer los impactos positivos,
y acciones para disminuir o neutralizar los impactos
negativos.

ABSTRACT

Ecotourism has contributed to the natural,
social, and economic balance of destinations.
From this perspective, tourism must coexist
with the natural and social environment in a
balanced way; one way to achieve this is through
environmental certifications.
Environmental certifications have gained great
value in tourism; in Mexico, the Integrally Planned
Center (CIP) Bahias de Huatulco was the first to
obtain EarthCheck certification as a sustainable
destination in the Americas and the second
internationally. There are non-governmental
organizations that strengthen environmental
certifications, such as Equipo Verde Huatulco
A.C., which through certifiers such as EarthCheck

carry out projects that make it easier for
destinations to obtain this accreditation.
These projects focus on the destination, service
providers, and the local community. However,
it seems that the local community has been
left aside since their perception of this issue
is unknown. In this article, the purpose of the
study was to identify the perception of the local
community regarding tourism activity in the CIP
Bahías de Huatulco, based on its environmental
certification. Some of the results are that
tourism activity is perceived by most of the local
community as an opportunity for economic
development; culturally, the destination has
promoted activities that involve tourists and local
people, which in the opinion of the latter, has
prevented the loss of their identity. However, they
also consider tourism to be "predatory" because
of the saturation of tourists concentrated in
certain places, impacting beaches, the marine
environment, and the image of the area. As a
result, actions are proposed to strengthen the
positive impacts, and actions to diminish or
neutralize the negative impacts.
