Abstract

When the book Cristo si è fermato a Eboliby Carlo Levi was published in 1945, a controversy particularly linked to orthodox Marxism stood out, which negatively underlined the “ahistorical” and “mythical” character of this work. This article shows the limits of that criticism and seeks to emphasise Levi's poetic revaluation of the peasant world by understanding his realism as "creation" of reality. To this end, the author of this study appeals to the analysis of certain aspects of the work and to the experience lived by the writer during his exile in southern Italy.
