Abstract

This article aims to relate the phenomena of authority and contempt, particularly in the educational field. In principle, a conceptual approach of both phenomena, aimed mainly by the contributions of philosophy and sociology, and then arrive to the educational field is performed. With the development of these concepts, a problem emerges: a person can establish itself as an authority as long as it is recognized or authorized as such by another (or others); however, it cannot be mutual recognition and manifest disregard of the authorized approver. The authority figure that corresponds to this type of relationship is that of independent person, an authority without love. Subsequently, an analysis of the film Whiplash (Chazelle, 2014) is performed, which presents a unique teacher-student ratio, which allows putting those concepts into play.  professor Fletcher appears as an independent person, and the young drummer image Neiman argues that establishing a
relationship of authority marked by disdain. In the uniqueness of this situation, we can see a possible way of linking the authority and contempt in an educational context, in this case in teaching jazz in a music conservatory.
