A current look at the transhumant breeders of Neuquén

Neuquén Province was characterized by extensive livestock production based on goat and sheep breeding. In the departments located in the mountain region, transhumance is practiced, taking advantage of the different ecological environments of the valleys and plateaus in contrast to the mountainous areas. In the region, ranchers are mostly families. The succession of extreme climatic and volcanic events has affected extensive livestock activity. At the same time, the modification of the sanitary barrier in 2013 changed the status south of the Barrancas and Colorado Rivers. In addition, the development of nearby urban areas has been observed, along with diversification in the matrix of activities.
The aim of this paper is to identify socio-productive changes in the transhumant livestock system in Neuquén. The quantitative and qualitative approach focused on the actors made it possible to identify transformations in the management methods of the production system, proving to be an effective methodology for understanding them. There is a modification in transhumance practices, as well as a substitution of species within livestock activity. The presence of young people who have made urban transitions, along with the incorporation of information and communication technologies, has redefined the practices of nomadic children.
