Notes On Game And Seriousness
Keywords:
Play, Seriousness, Plato, Aristotle, PlotinusAbstract
The association between play and seriousness is a locus classicus in Greek literature, and philosophers have not stopped reflecting on these two aspects of human life. The purpose of this paper is to present and discuss a number of passages on play and seriousness taken from works of Plato, Aristotle and Plotinus. I will examine the way in which these three authors approach the topic and conceive the relationship between play and seriousness. Despite their different perspectives, they share some elements and regard play and seriousness as complementary both in life and in writing.
