This paper addresses current issues in childhood and adolescence, in relation to the role that parents play in upbringing, its effects, and implications. The sociocultural context, marked by the loss of ideals that once guided the family, leads to the prevalence of slogans like "freedom" and "respectful parenting." This has resulted in parents who are unable to assert themselves as authority figures or say "no," transforming the parent-child relationship. Boundaries become blurred, and decisions shift from parents to children.
This context promotes the pathologization and medicalization of childhood, as diagnoses emerge to address what parents are unable to manage, largely due to their inability to symbolically position themselves as adults who can care for and support a child.
Medicalization, by focusing on the child’s symptoms, ignores the child’s subjectivity and family context. Considering the family as an analytical and intervention unit is crucial when working with children, as subjective constitution depends on a family network that assumes protective and caregiving roles. Our objective is to reflect on these relationships and reconsider clinical
approaches with children.
